Mark and Wendy spent many years traveling before settling on the Peninsula in 1982 when they bought the farm and cottage which have since become Kokopu Estate. The name Kokopu comes from the native fish which once inhabited the stream that flows through the farm.
Their two children were born on Banks Peninsula and their son, Steve now runs Vangionis Trattoria and Bar, an Italian restaurant in the town.
They grow their own vegetables and herbs for the restaurant and also make the charcuterie for it.
It has been recommended by Al Brown and Pita Mathias has also enjoyed the food there.

Great walking options

There are great walking options close to the estate or in the nearby Hinewai Reserve. The idyllic inlets and deep valleys of the beautiful Banks Peninsula provide spectacular walks and superb photographic opportunities. Whilst some hikes begin from town and explore pockets of native bush, others are along the spine of the Peninsula with views over the whole area.
Some walks can be accessed directly from our farm.

Flea bay

Flea bay, close to Akaroa, is home to the largest Little Penguin colony on the mainland. Take a tour with Francis and Shireen to see the penguins or take a sea kayaking or scenic nature tour. www.pohatu.co.nz

High tea

If you want to explore more of banks peninsula you can make a tour and rest at this marvelous place where you they serve a delicious devonshire tea. Take a step back in time. Come and see the old hall, gaze at the views and enjoy a Devonshire tea served in fine old china. Your host Chris welcomes you at Old Chorlton Hall, which is situated on the hill above Little Akaloa. Farmtour at Paua Bay

For a true farmlife experience you can book a farmtour at Paua Bay. Meet Sue & Murray Johns, their sheep and their dogs and come to where the land meets the sea. www.pauabayfarmtours.co.nz.

Experience traditional New Zealand farming on a Hill Country Farm on Banks Peninsula. See sheep dogs working and get a hands-on demonstration on mustering sheep. Try your skills at shearing a sheep and handling the wool. Listen to the history of Akaroa and the early settlers and enjoy afternoon tea and scones on the homestead verandah.

Murray Johns, the farmer of Paua Bay Farm, will welcome you upon arrival and lead you through the colourful history of his family, being farmers on that very spot for five generations.

Restaurants

We have our own Italian restaurant in Akaroa which is run by our son, Steve. We make our own chorizo, bresaola, smoked salmon and bacon. In the garden at the top of the hill, next to the vineyard, some of the herbs and vegetables used in the restaurant are grown.
Our specialty is tasty tapas and pizzas with our own crusty herb base and selection of delicious toppings. We also have a great selection of local seafood.

Activities in Akaroa

There are lots of activities in Akaroa including cruising the harbour, viewing or swimming with the rare Hector’s Dolphins and horse trekking. The museum is very interesting as is the one in Okains Bay.

Akaroa Village

Kokopu Estate is only two minutes by car (a 15 minute walk) from Akaroa Village. The village offers a host of attractions for visitors and we have our own restaurant, Vangionis Trattoria and Bar, plus there are art galleries and a selection of shops to visit.

Our private garden

Relax in the private garden area which is planted with established trees, roses, rhododendrons and feijoas. The sound of the creek provides a splendid accompaniment to the bellbirds. Our farm connects with other walks in the valley and on the last day of the Banks Peninsula track you can walk straight to Kokopu Estate from Woodills Track.
